damn guys. lot of submissions the past few weeks. I’m gooing to have to pick up the pace. How do you guys feel about 2 contests a weeks. Ending every Sunday and Thursday.

SORT OUT HOW THE VOTING WORKS!!!
At the moment, EVERYONE is just putting “down” votes, which is causing nothing to get a positive score, this really isn’t a fair way of making the votes count because as soon as someone new comes on, they just automatically vote “down” on everyone elses so their’s will be most likly to win.
Ironically it ends up with the person who posted a comment last who is most likly to win as they will have the least amount of time for people to vote it “down”.
It would be better if you could only vote for someone once, so that your vote counted, or so that you can only vote something “up”, this way, people who comment last won’t have an unfair advantage over someone who comments first.
I mean look at the first section of postings, the majority have a -8 or -7, one of two have a -2 or -3, so waht would that have been like if people didn’t keep voting them down?

Ebio, you can only vote for someone once, it’s just some captions are percieved as of (pardon the pun) shatner quality, and more than one person decided they don’t deserve a positive vote from them.

so Rdhawk by your analogy NONE of the quotes here deserve to be used as the captions because they ALL have minus votes…. how does that make sense?
Also, that doesn’t take into account the ones that were submitted over a week ago. They have had a whole week of negative votes against them, whilst the ones that were submitted today will only have one days worth of negative votes.
If we’re going by who has the least negative votes (which im assuming we’ll have to now), the one’s submitted last will always win because they will have had the least time to have negative votes cast against them.
Being able to vote only once doesn’t change the fact that submitting last will result in always have a less negative score. will it?
Whereas if you could only vote positivly, people would use their votes properly as it would actually count for something. Rather than clearly just voting negativly against everything which everyone is CLEARLY doing as NO ONE has a POSITIVE score at the moment.

sorry to go on, but it doesn’t matter how good or bad a caption is, if everyone just keeps voting negativly (which they are doing incase you havn’t realised it yet, regardless of how good a caption is or not), then we will always get a caption that isn’t truly worthy.
Whoever is actually running this, needs to realise the massive flaw in the voting system and sort it out….
just to prove my point, as of when i posted this, seeing as i was the last to post, i currently have the highest vote of +0 on all three of my past posts… even though no one has voted on my “captions”.
does this mean that my rants will be the captions for this picture?
My vote is for Ebio’s rants as the captions….
You know, the first 3 or 4 days could be caption submissions, then all the caption submissions are gathered up into a poll format to be voted on in the next 3 or 4 days. The winner of that vote could be the caption.
However, I don’t believe that Happy Vader is paying attention to the votes anyway, as the caption used for the last contest was no way near the highest score. I think he just picks the one he likes best.
After all… it is HIS site.

I do pay attention to the site guys. I do my best to get the captions out by Monday, but personal life events tend to over ride my attempts to update.
Regarding the voting mechanism, she’s the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs. In other works it’s the best we’ve got for now.
I get a snapshot of the votes as they come in on midnight Sunday, so no matter what they are rated after that, its the score I have reported at midnight that counts. I also don’t pay too much attention to whether the quotes come in negative or positive. If the highest is -10 then its the winner. Highest wins as long as it follows the rules. The best I can say is to write a truly epic caption. I’ve seen quite a few first posts that were rated positive and stood the test of a week’s worth of slamming. Those are the kind people want to have up.
As to the problem with recent posts having better ratings due to less activity, it is a problem that is not easily remedied. But I do like Dom’s idea, its going to take me some work. I can lock comments on a contest after a certain time, but I’m not sure how I’m going to hack the widget to lock comments on it. Lets just get through this contest. I’ll post the winner and get a new one out for next week and then try to hack the widget this weekend.
Ebio Amisi - I understand your concern, I recommend, for now, modding the ones you like up and modding down the ones you dislike. There is nothing evil about doing it, you are just expressing your preference. You can always come back later in the week to exert your opinion on more recent submissions. Its not the best solution but its a bandaid until I work on something better.

I see what your saying Vader and to be honest, you are running this very well. One simple solution that might be simpler to implement would be to simply remove the option to vote negativly. That way, people would only vote on the ones that truly deserved a vote, whilst ruling out mass negative voting, no?
